WHAT IS SPECIAL
Introduced in 1948, the Patek Philippe Ref. 2431 was made by Emile Vichet, the very same case maker behind the legendary Ref. 1518. The 2431 has neither a perpetual calendar nor a chronograph. Instead, it turns design itself into a kind of “complication.” Patek Philippe’s choice of such a high-level case maker also speaks to the complexity of the reference.
The beauty of the 2431 lies in the fact that its lugs are not simply soldered onto the case, but formed integrally with it. They flare outward, twist, and taper at the tips, like flames rising from either side of the case. This moment of movement seems to have been frozen in metal. One might call the 2431 Patek Philippe’s Baroque moment: it breaks away from the quiet restraint usually associated with Calatrava design, containing a surge of emotion within its small volutes.
This particular 2431 is in excellent condition, which is especially important for a reference of such sculptural complexity. Once the rich transitions and sharp ridges of the lugs are softened by polishing, much of the detail that makes the watch so rewarding to study is inevitably lost.
