WHAT IS SPECIAL
Born in the early 1980s, the Ref. 18058 was one of Rolex’s earliest experiments with colored gemstones. Many high-jewellery watches simply pile on stones with little regard for design, but this 18058 is a notable exception.
At first glance, it is unapologetically extravagant: a yellow-gold case, a fully diamond-set dial, and an entire bezel encircled by deep blue sapphires. Yet beneath that dazzling surface lies a far more considered design. What makes the watch compelling is not merely how many gemstones Rolex used, but how successfully they were organized into a coherent composition rather than simply layered on for brilliance.
Blue is the central motif. The ring of deep blue sapphires around the bezel is echoed by the sapphire hour markers on the dial, then repeated once again in the blue backgrounds of the day and date displays. The depth of the sapphires tempers the sparkle of the diamonds, while the contrast between blue and the warmth of the yellow-gold case gives the watch its unmistakable visual character.
The gemstones on the bezel are themselves unusual. Rather than using a more conventional cut, Rolex arranged elongated baguette-cut sapphires continuously around the circumference. The appeal of the baguette cut lies not in producing explosive fire, but in its stepped facets, which emphasize the intrinsic color and clean linearity of the stone. Set one after another, the sapphires form an uninterrupted blue track around the case, creating an intriguing dialogue between the rectangular geometry of the stones and the circular form of the watch.
The dial is almost completely covered in diamonds. To preserve the continuity of the pavé setting, Rolex even surrendered the usual position of its own logo: the coronet and ROLEX signature were ingeniously applied to the underside of the sapphire crystal. This allowed the diamond setting to remain uninterrupted, while making the logo appear almost as if it were floating above the surface. The black hands are another deliberate choice, cutting sharply through the highly ornate background to preserve clear legibility.
From the outset, then, the Ref. 18058 was conceived as a complete and coherent design rather than as a conventional Day-Date with jewellery simply added on top. To organize such maximalist elements with this degree of control and balance is precisely what makes this watch so appealing to me.
