WHAT IS SPECIAL
Many collectors will be familiar with Patek Philippe’s millennium commemorative Ref. 5100, with its slightly flared, streamlined case and highly distinctive 10-day power reserve. Yet that design did not emerge from nowhere. Its lineage looks back directly to the Ref. 2554 introduced here.
Patek Philippe Ref. 2554 was born in the 1950s, a vibrant post-war period marked by extraordinary creative experimentation. During this era, Patek Philippe explored a wide range of case designs, giving rise to visionary creators such as Gilbert Albert. Ref. 2554 was one of his works.
The shape of the 2554 may have drawn inspiration from the sculptures of Brâncuși. Rather than following the rigid vertical lines of a conventional rectangular watch, its gently curved case and wing-like flared sides give it a highly expressive presence. This is also the origin of its nickname, the “Manta Ray.” From every angle, the watch appears elegant, fluid and beautifully extended.
This particular Ref. 2554 is cased in white gold, with only nine examples known to have surfaced. Shaped Patek Philippe watches in white metal are exceptionally rare and precious, occupying a category of their own.
The “Manta Ray” case was made by Markowski, the renowned casemaker celebrated for his expertise in shaped cases and for bringing many of Gilbert Albert’s most imaginative designs to life. Even more remarkable is the state of preservation of this case, whose original form remains astonishingly intact — like a time capsule sealed away for seventy years.
