WHAT IS SPECIAL

This Blancpain Fifty Fathoms comes from the family of a member of Jacques-Yves Cousteau’s legendary diving team. We acquired it from the diver’s daughter, who now resides in the United States.

Beginning in the 1950s, the development of the Fifty Fathoms was closely tied to the naval forces of Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. At the time, professional divers and exploration teams relied on watches like these as essential tools for deep-sea exploration.

Setting the story aside for a moment, please look closely at the second image: what is the red paint visible there? This is Blancpain’s original return seal. If a customer wore the watch for a period of time and decided to return it, the loss of this red paint indicated that the return window had been exceeded. I have almost never seen a Fifty Fathoms retaining this red paint mark; its presence is a remarkable indicator of exceptional preservation.

Out of respect for its history and originality, I chose not to alter the watch in any way. Even though the crystal shows some clouding, it has not been polished, in order to preserve every trace of its past. The dial, however, remains in extraordinarily fine condition.

This example is the Fifty Fathoms “Milspec 1”, the military-specification version, but importantly, not a military-issued watch. It is the civilian variant, fitted with safer tritium lume rather than radium. Civilian Milspec examples are far rarer than their military counterparts, and examples in this condition are rarer still.

For collectors of vintage dive watches, or Blancpain enthusiasts in particular, you will understand just how special a treasure like this truly is.
