This is Blancpain’s original return seal. If a customer wore the watch for a period of time and decided to return it, the loss of this red paint indicated that the return window had been exceeded. I have almost never seen a Fifty Fathoms retaining this red paint mark; its presence is a remarkable indicator of exceptional preservation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOut of respect for its history and originality, I chose not to alter the watch in any way. Even though the crystal shows some clouding, it has not been polished, in order to preserve every trace of its past. The dial, however, remains in extraordinarily fine condition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis example is the Fifty Fathoms “Milspec 1”, the military-specification version, but importantly, not a military-issued watch. It is the civilian variant, fitted with safer tritium lume rather than radium.
